Established in 1997 by the Chinese government, the company is a state-owned corporation and is recognized by its pinyin transcription of its Chinese name, Qirui. In August 2021, SPG Automobiles Pvt. Ltd, a subsidiary of Sharda Group, was appointed as Chery's authorized distributor in Nepal. SPG Automobiles Pvt. Ltd. has a rich history in the automotive industry in Nepal and has made a positive impact in the local market. The company sells passenger cars under the Chery brand and commercial vehicles under the Karry brand. Chery ranks 10th among China-based car manufacturers, with an output of approximately 590,000 units in 2012. The company started producing cars in 1999 and exporting from China in 2001. Since 2003, Chery has been China's largest passenger car exporter, accounting for 25% of total production in 2011. Additionally, Chery operates a joint venture with Kenon Holdings, Qoros, which sells premium vehicles in emerging markets. In 2012, Chery formed a 50-50 joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover called Chery Jaguar Land Rover, aimed at producing Jaguar and Land Rover cars in China.
